For hundreds of years, firearms experienced significant recoil… until they didn’t. A new breed of weapons, developed in the 20s and 30s, changed all that. Suddenly, rifles could be recoilless. But what does that mean? And why are they not everywhere?

    Does anybody who's not me remember the 3D tank game from the 80s called Conquerer? It was a 3rd person game where you take control of a fleet of tanks and fight an opponent, there were British, American and Nazi sides. You could jump into any tank and the remaining tanks on the field would be AI controlled. You fought until all your tanks or their tanks were knocked out. You could also have two joy sticks control one tank, so two of you could be driver and gunner.

    Funny how, after all of the work that went into all these different tanks, mediums, heavies, lights, nuclear, aluminium rocket tanks, etc etc, they'd already knocked it out the park with Centurion in 1945.

    the further the turrent is back in the tank the less you can aim down with the gun... which is important when firing from a lowered position and driving over a bump or hill... you need to show much mor tank before you can fire... so in tank battles this is important...

    Towards the end, Germany had run out of one particular resource, i forget the name, but it prevented their tank armour from being brittle. I'd bet that those 2 hits on that Panther showed that this tank was made after they ran out of, er, something. Some other metal for the alloy Putting that 6" hole and then shattering the turret is a giveaway I'd think.

  • @MostlyPennyCat
    @MostlyPennyCat День тому

    I would have thought a better idea for the balance problem would be to mount the gun further back in the turret. You can easily add extra space behind the breech and empty space doesn't weigh anything, preserving it's low weight.

    • @RedWrenchFilms
      @RedWrenchFilms 17 годин тому

      But the loader has to reach behind the breech - so with a fixed turret ring size he would be standing halfway down the breech and trying to manoeuvre a 90mm shell into it in a very uncomfortable way!

    • @MostlyPennyCat
      @MostlyPennyCat 13 годин тому

      @@RedWrenchFilms That's what the extra space was for, the loader is at the back of a longer turret. Just a guess anyway and it would screw with the elevation. The weight is certainly the easiest solution.

    • @RedWrenchFilms
      @RedWrenchFilms 13 годин тому

      @@MostlyPennyCat I mean the loader is standing in the turret within the diameter of the turret ring, so even if you make the turret larger you’d need to make the turret ring larger so he could stand in the same relative position if that makes sense!

    • @MostlyPennyCat
      @MostlyPennyCat 12 годин тому

      @@RedWrenchFilms Surely you can make the turret wider without widening the turret ring? I dunno, they fixed it anyway, it certainly needed power traverse

    • @RedWrenchFilms
      @RedWrenchFilms 10 годин тому

      @@MostlyPennyCat Wish I could show you a diagram or something to better explain what I mean - it's the position of the loader that's the issue, not the dimensions of the turret itself. Assuming his hip is resting against the turret ring he can't physically move any farther backwards! So extending the breach further would make loading difficult.
